Painting a room is one of the simplest ways to refresh your home, and with the right tools and techniques, anyone can achieve great results. At Goldferns, we believe good preparation and quality materials make all the difference. Follow this step-by-step guide to paint your room the right way and enjoy a finish you can be proud of.

Start with the Right Paint and Supplies

Choosing the correct paint is key to a long-lasting result. For most indoor projects, interior water-based paint (emulsion) is easy to use and dries quickly. The finish you choose matters too:

  • Matte or flat for bedrooms and ceilings
  • Satin or eggshell for living spaces and hallways
  • Semi-gloss for kitchens, bathrooms, and trim

Make sure you also have quality brushes, rollers, paint trays, drop cloths, and painter’s tape. Investing in good tools helps create a smoother, more professional finish.

Prepare the Space Properly

Before painting, move or cover furniture and protect your floors with drop sheets. Use painter’s tape to mask off trims, windows, and switches. Clean the walls to remove dust and marks, and repair any holes or cracks with filler. Once dry, lightly sand the area so the wall is smooth.

Don’t Skip the Primer

Primer creates a clean, even surface and helps paint adhere better. It’s especially important when covering dark colours, stains, or repaired areas. Allow the primer to dry fully before applying paint.

Cut In Before Rolling

Use a brush to paint along edges, corners, and around trim. This step, known as cutting in, makes it easier to roll the walls neatly and prevents uneven edges.

Roll for a Smooth Finish

Load your roller evenly and apply paint using a “W” pattern to spread it smoothly across the wall. Work in small sections and avoid pressing too hard. Most rooms will need two coats for the best coverage, with drying time in between.

Finish and Clean Up

Once the paint is dry, carefully remove painter’s tape at an angle. Clean your brushes and rollers straight away so they’re ready for your next project. Store leftover paint in a sealed container for touch-ups.

Enjoy the Results

Allow the room to fully dry before moving furniture back in. With the right preparation and products, your freshly painted room will look clean, bright, and professionally done.
